In the wake of last year’s Black Lives Matter protests, EatOkra saw a spike in interest as more people sought out Black-owned local businesses. Since its launch, their brainchild has compiled listings for 12,000 restaurants, racked up 400,000 downloads, scored partnerships with brands such as Uber and Pepsi, and turned into a small business with three employees and around 8 contractors. Their interest in exploring eateries in their new neighborhood turned into the idea for their app, which spotlights Black-owned restaurants, food trucks, and food products. Janique and Anthony Edwards Then there’s EatOkra, which Janique and Anthony Edwards created back in 2016 when they were dating–they’ve since married–and were recent arrivals in Brooklyn.
